Due West

The WPA's 1941 Guide to the Palmetto State informs us that Due West was often called The Holy City as the Sabbath quiet was so cherished here. Today this is still a peaceful town of beautiful 19th century homes and the leafy, manicured campus of Erskine College

Prior to the Revolution, Due West was another trading poston the Cherokee Path but its

history is closely interwoven with the history of the Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church. They built the church at Due West Corner in 1790 and their Synod founded Erskine College in 1839. As the college developed so did the modern town of Due West with the first intendant (Mayor), Squire James Lindsay, being the chief builder of both the college and town.
